Hi, I’m Krista!

The Common Place has been a natural evolution for me. I have been practicing the artistry of hair for more than half my life. I have seen the inside of many salons (even founding and opening one of the Comox Valley’s first eco-salons), and I have worked with an endless array of products. From my experience I have learned how important it is to know what we are using on our bodies and in our hair. While also understanding the value in elevating the client experience.

When it comes to hair I specialize in low maintenance colours - think lived in blondes, or gently blended natural silver so you won’t be married to the 6 week retouch. I also love fun, funky, and easy to style cuts that will fit your life. Texture is key. I wear a lot of helmets & helmet head is no match for a great haircut.

One of the ways I care for my clients is striving to ensure ingredient integrity, brand transparency, and product performance. The Common Place store is the epitome of these values.

More time at home has allowed us to reflect on the things that surround us. The Common Place is here to help you create the home and hair you want to live in. Choose from our inspired, sustainable products and services, by folks who are getting paid a fair price to create them.

If you need me, I’ll be here, creating life proof hairstyles and working on making and gathering extraordinary products that will enrich your life and do better for our planet.

Hi, I'm John!

The Common Place Salon became my home for hairstyling in April of 2023. So much of what The Common Place offers resonates with me as a stylist and a person. I am so proud to work in a salon that puts the health of our planet and our customers as a top priority. I love the fact that we get to work in an intimate environment that allows me to focus on my client’s needs during their service. As a stylist, I care deeply about my clients' experience. I strive to ensure clients feel heard and that the process is comfortable and open.

My passion for art, woodworking and design have led me to have a diverse skill set as a stylist. I offer a range of services from highlights, colouring and cuts for everyone.

Being a proud member of the LGBTQ+2IA community, I am honored to work in a salon that ensures a safe space for all individuals.

Hi, I'm Jay!

I have been hairstyling for over 40 years and have had the pleasure of working alongside some very talented hairstylists. From the first days of my apprenticeship I trained in the techniques of Vidal Sassoon while working in a salon that had stylists from London, Italy, Greece and Liverpool. Because of this training I was able to work in the best salons in Calgary at that time including The Ginger Group, Scenarios and Angles. This led to meeting a highly skilled hairstylist and long time manager of Vidal Sassoon Toronto, who became a mentor for six years.

My approach to hairstyling would best be called “natural”. I don’t fight the hair, I don’t beat it into submission, I become familiar with it, respect it, take care of it and cooperate with it. It may sound less than humble to say I can cut any type of hair well but it’s no different than being a skilled and experienced cellist who can play pretty much any piece of music put in front of her. It’s simply the natural outcome of someone doing what they enjoy, a little natural talent, a lot of dedication and a great deal of experience.

I care about the people I serve and deeply value listening and clear communication. I also love and value beauty in all of its genuine, natural forms and endeavors to bring that beauty out in my work.

Writing poetry, playing music and creating art in the forms of painting and sculpture have also been enjoyable aspects of my life, as has living a spiritual lifestyle and practicing meditation.

I’m extremely grateful to being living in the beautiful Comox Valley and working at The Common Place salon.
